My name is Shannon and I suffer from Fibromyalgia, among other conditions. It began when I was 20 years old and I started experiencing chronic back pain. I was sent to the Chiropractor and other doctors. Not one of them knew what was wrong with me. They gave me muscle relaxers and medication to help with the pain and they left me like that.
Well, I pushed for answers as my condition was getting worse. I was sent to two surgeons. They told me that if I lost weight, then I would be fine!
My Nurse practitioner wasn’t happy. She decided to send me to another surgeon who was two hours away from me. After two months of seeing him, I ended up with back surgery to get a spinal fusion. It is now failed back surgery syndrome. I also have degenerative disc disease.
It was then that I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and Neuropathy. (Neuropathy is damage or dysfunction of one or more nerves that typically results in numbness, tingling, muscle weakness and pain in the affected area).
I used to work a full time and part time job. The last day that I was able to work was on the 31st of October 2009. I have ended up with depression, anxiety and feeling suicidal. Going from always working to not been able to provide for my family has made me feel completely useless.
It has taken me a long time to understand that this is the life I have been given. I AM STILL ALIVE and that’s all that matters. My family is so helpful and understanding and I feel very blessed. I have a 17 year old daughter who also suffers from Fibromyalgia and together we are honestly learning about the condition. Neither of our doctors explained to us what Fibromyalgia really was or offered us any support.
I have learned more about Fibromyalgia and received so much support from Instagram. For this I’m so very grateful.
