Hello, my name is Sophie, I’m 18 years old and I live in the south east of England.

When I was very young, I struggled with symptoms of anxiety and other mental health conditions. At age 11, I started experiencing many of the symptoms of Fibromyalgia, most notably of course, being in a lot of pain. Seeing as I was so young, my doctor told me it was growing pains and I needn’t worry about it. Only this year have I been told I have Fibromyalgia despite actually having it for 7 years.

Because of my Fibromyalgia, I have experienced extreme joint pain, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), fatigue, mental health issues, Raynaud’s, and some of the other smaller symptoms. Through all of this I have learnt that it is so important when you have a chronic illness to put yourself first. I try not to push my body past what it is capable of doing and just treat myself as well as I can, so as not to put my body through more stress.

One of the main things I do that helps is horse riding. Not only does it help mentally by being able to spend time with Ush, my share pony, but physically too, as the heat from the horse’s body really helps to relax my muscle pain.

My main advice to anyone who is newly diagnosed or struggling, is to do your own research, find other people who have experienced this condition, and just find what works for you as we all experience the condition differently.

I am now managing my pain better than I ever have before and am trying to live my life to the fullest by going to university next year!

Thank you for reading my story. If anyone wants to contact me my Instagram is @canteringcob._ and I would love to be able to speak to anyone who wants advice or just a chat.
